The LeBron era in LA is over — he's a Sixer now — and the Lakers rebuilt their Big 3 around Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and newly acquired Walker Kessler. Two of those three are proven quantities. Reaves put up 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 38.7 fantasy points per game across 51 games in 2025-26 (an actual result), good for our #39 overall rank, and he cashed in with the richest contract ever given to an undrafted player: four years, $180 million.
The question mark is Kessler, and it's a big one. The 25-year-old center played just five games last season before a torn labrum in his left shoulder ended his year. LA paid up anyway — four years, $130 million plus two unprotected first-round picks and two swaps in the sign-and-trade with Utah, leaving the franchise without a tradable first for seven years. That's not a role-player price. That's a bet.
What LA Actually Needs From Him
The blueprint is clear: Kessler needs to be the Rudy Gobert or Chet Holmgren of this roster — a rim-running, screen-setting anchor who springs Doncic and Reaves loose while patrolling the paint. He's already shown the defensive chops, contesting 7.5 shots at the rim per game in 2024-25 (an actual mark that tied for fifth in the league). Now he's motivated, playing for a contender instead of a Jazz team that's missed the playoffs four straight years, and he said he'd run through a wall for the Lakers.
The Doncic-Reaves pairing, by contrast, needs no selling. They went 15-4 to open last season with James sidelined by sciatica, then rolled past the Pacers, Knicks and Timberwolves during a three-game LeBron absence last March. That stretch was convincing enough that James returned as the third option — a role he'd never played in 23 seasons — before leaving in free agency entirely.

The West is loaded with battle-tested trios — the champion Thunder (with Holmgren at 36.2 FPTS/G, our #46, in 2025-26), the Finals-runner-up Spurs and the 2023 champion Nuggets. LA's group hasn't logged a single game together, and Kessler is the variable that decides whether this is a fringe contender or a title threat.
For fantasy managers, treat Reaves as a locked-in top-40 asset — draft him with confidence, even with a mild -3.9 FPTS dip over his last five of 2025-26. Kessler is the intriguing name. His counting-stat ceiling as Luka's primary screen-and-roll big is real, but the tiny five-game sample and shoulder history mean the market may sleep on him. Buy low now while there's doubt; if the pick-and-roll chemistry clicks early, that discount vanishes fast.
