Holmgren's absence hands Mara real minutes and elite block upside.

Key numbers
  • Holmgren out 8-10 weeks, eyeing January return
  • OKC missing 3 of its top 6 players before November
  • Mara: 7 blocks in 5 games on light minutes
  • Holmgren ranked #45 overall, #8 among centers
  • Thunder 4-1 but blown out by Dallas without Chet

Chet Holmgren underwent treatment Friday for a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee, and Oklahoma City expects him out for the next 8-10 weeks. That points to a January return for a player our model ranks #45 overall and #8 among centers, with a 34.5 FPTS/G mark across three games this season (2026-27) before the shutdown.

This isn't an isolated hit. Jalen Williams is gone for the year with a leg injury, and Cason Wallace will miss most of the season after labrum surgery. That leaves the Thunder without three of their top six players less than a month into a campaign where they opened as Western Conference co-favorites with a win total north of 60.

OKC is still 4-1, but Wednesday's lopsided loss in Dallas — Holmgren already sidelined — showed what a thinner contender looks like. Losing one of the league's best rim protectors while the backcourt is already gutted forces Mark Daigneault to rebuild his rotations from scratch.

The depth that carried Oklahoma City the last two seasons was already fraying. Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe all walked this summer as the front office navigated second-apron math. Those were defensible cost cuts in a vacuum; stacked on top of three injuries, they sting.

Enter Aday Mara

The plan was to bring the 7-foot-3 rookie out of Michigan along slowly. That plan is dead. Mara flashed against Victor Wembanyama on opening night and logged his first double-double Monday against Phoenix — 11 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes. He was quieter in 21 minutes against Dallas, which is the rookie rollercoaster in a nutshell.

Mara's offensive role is narrow. Roughly 80% of his attempts have come within four feet, and 75% have come off zero dribbles — he's a play-finisher, full stop. Where Isaiah Hartenstein operates from the high post and Jaylin Williams spaces the floor, Mara needs the offense engineered around him rather than the reverse.

Defense is the selling point. Seven blocks in five games on limited minutes is a real signal, and it's the skill the Thunder drafted him to deploy against Wembanyama for the next decade. The catch: he's picked up nine fouls across his two 20-plus-minute outings. Learning to anchor without fouling out is the whole development curve over the next two months.

The Trade Market Angle

Sam Presti was already kicking tires before Holmgren went down, with players signed this summer not eligible to move until December 15. Holmgren's January timeline gives OKC a convenient window — weather the storm, see how Chet looks for a couple weeks post-return, then decide on a smaller tweak or a bigger swing before the deadline. A center rotation of Hartenstein, Williams, Mara and some Kenrich Williams at the four should hold; the shopping list is wing and backcourt help.

And don't sleep on the MVP subplot. Nobody has three-peated since Larry Bird in the 1980s, with voter fatigue usually derailing the bid. If there's ever a season to break that drought, it's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ddragging a gutted roster to a top-four seed.

The Fantasy Fallout

Mara is the obvious add in deeper formats. He's unranked and posting just 14.7 FPTS/G over five games this season (2026-27), but the blocks and rebounds give him a stream-worthy floor the moment his minutes climb into the mid-20s. Watch the foul trouble — it caps his ceiling until he cleans it up. Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams also gain value as the rotation compresses, and SGA's usage and counting stats only go up with the supporting cast this thin.

As for Holmgren managers: this is a HOLD, not a panic-drop. An 8-10 week absence hurts, but a January return for a top-10 center is worth stashing if you have the IL slot. Bottom line — ADD Mara now for the blocks and the opportunity, and buy the SGA shares if anyone's spooked.
