With James now in Philadelphia, the Lakers spent the offseason bolting a new roster onto Luka Doncic, headlined by a two-first-round-pick-plus-two-swaps trade for Walker Kessler and a re-signing of Austin Reaves. For fantasy managers, this isn't just a vibe shift — it reshapes usage, touches and rebounding across the whole rotation.
The framing that's making the rounds is a joke about the roster's makeup, but the real question underneath it is defensive. Former Lakers guard Byron Scott pointed out that title teams have finished top-five in defensive efficiency for 40 years running, and this group is built to score first. Doncic and Reaves are both high-volume creators — great for box-score fantasy, less relevant to whether LA actually stops anyone.

The concern with Reaves is his recent trend: his last five games ran 3.9 fantasy points below his season average. That's noise, not signal, but with Kessler now soaking up interior touches and a deeper supporting cast, his ceiling in a single-star offense may compress slightly. He's still a rock-solid mid-round guard.
The Value Play at Center
Kessler is the one nobody's ranking yet, and that's the opportunity. He's currently unranked after just five games in 2025-26, but those five produced 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 38.3 fantasy points per game. Slot a rim-running, elite-rebounding big next to a pass-first Doncic and the assist-fueled dunks and offensive boards should flow. Quentin Grimes, meanwhile, projects as a lower-end streamer at best — he's our #143 (#67 at guard) on 24.8 fantasy points per game last season, and his last five ran a rough 7.4 below average.
Bottom line for your draft board: Doncic is a top-two pick, full stop, and Reaves is a dependable mid-round guard even if his ceiling narrows. The move to make is buying low on Kessler before his ranking catches up to his new role — a starting center on a Luka offense with double-digit boards is worth a late-round dart. Leave Grimes on waivers until he shows he's more than a defensive specialist.
