SGA's 141-Game 20-Point Streak Ends at 17 — Why It Barely Matters

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

One cold 17-point night against an extreme game plan changes nothing.

Key numbers
  • SGA held to 17 pts on 6-of-19 FG vs Denver
  • Streak of 141 straight 20-pt games snapped
  • Just 2 free-throw attempts on the night
  • Thunder won 96-84; SGA subbed himself out
  • Only Wilt (126) ever topped 80 straight 20s

It took nearly two full seasons and an NBA-record 141 straight games, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finally had a night below 20 points. The reigning scoring machine was limited to 17 on 6-of-19 shooting in the Thunder's 96-84 win over Denver on Thursday, ending a run that stretched all the way back to Oct. 30, 2024. He checked out with 1:43 left and never chased the three points he needed to keep it alive.

The streak didn't die to a hot opponent so much as a smothering game plan. Nikola Jokic abandoned his man to double SGA's drives, wings crowded his airspace, and Christian Braun stayed glued to his chest all night. Mark Daigneault would have left him in to get the bucket, but once the Nuggets pulled their starters down 17, Gilgeous-Alexander waved himself out too — a gesture Chet Holmgren called selfless, admitting he'd have been chucking pull-up threes himself.

SGA said afterward he simply felt the game deserved respect once Denver subbed, and that he'll have plenty of chances to start another streak. Hard to argue. He missed 11 of his first 12 shots, sat on two points at the half, and still clawed to 17 on a late elbow jumper and a trailing transition three before the final whistle.

Why This Is a Nothing Night for Your Roster

Two things conspired here: Denver's scheme and a rare off shooting night from a guy who makes 20 look like a layup line. He also got to the line just twice, which kills the easy-volume floor that usually bails out cold scorers. There's a mild wrinkle worth tracking — with Jalen Williams back in the fold, SGA appears to be working off-ball a touch more early this season — but that's long been how the Thunder operate, and it's not a usage red flag yet.

For context on how absurd the record is: after SGA's 141, only Wilt Chamberlain (126 and 92) has ever cleared 80 straight 20-point games. Oscar Robertson maxed out at 79. Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant each topped out at 72, Kareem at 71. The best scorers in history barely made it halfway. This one may sit untouched for a very long time.

Fantasy managers: do absolutely nothing. One ugly line against an opponent that sold out defensively isn't a trend — it's noise. SGA remains a top-of-the-draft anchor, and the supporting cast still eats: Holmgren is our No. 45 overall player posting 36.4 fantasy points per game early in 2026-27, and Williams is chipping in 29.4 in the same stretch. Braun, fresh off 23.8 fantasy points per game across 44 games in 2025-26, is the Nugget who actually earned something here. Hold SGA, and expect the streak clock to reset immediately.
