NBA Expansion Nears: Las Vegas Set to Land $12B+ Franchise, Seattle Next

The NBA is about to make it official: Las Vegas is getting a team, and the winning ownership bid is expected to land in the "very near future." Per reporting, the combined cost of the franchise and a not-yet-built arena will run at least $12-13 billion, with three finalist groups still standing. Whichever wins, this becomes the first new NBA franchise since the Charlotte Bobcats arrived in 2004.

Commissioner Adam Silver has said repeatedly he wants the expansion question resolved by the end of the year. Vegas and Seattle were both approved back in March as the two markets the league would explore, with an initial target of tip-off in the 2028-29 season. Why Vegas First, Seattle Second

Vegas is expected to get approved first, but that doesn't shut the door on Seattle — it may actually crack it open wider. The bidding pool in Vegas is deeper, so groups that lose out there could pivot to Seattle, where Samantha Holloway, owner of the NHL's Kraken, is the only known bidder so far. Settling Vegas resolves the logjam.

The bigger holdup is bricks and mortar. Seattle already has Climate Pledge Arena ready to go; Silver said if the league were opening in five weeks, they could be ready there. Vegas has no confirmed site yet, which is why most of the recent board of governors discussion centered on it. Renovating T-Mobile Arena is one option, though Silver acknowledged it'd need significant work — and there are groups pitching a brand-new "entertainment palace" built for 365-day-a-year use.

If a permanent building isn't ready in time, expect a stopgap. Silver floated using T-Mobile or another venue temporarily, and there's precedent: the Raptors played their first three seasons in Toronto's SkyDome before moving to what's now Scotiabank Arena. So a Vegas debut in a placeholder arena is very much on the table.

For fantasy purposes, file this under long-term intel, not lineup news. Expansion doesn't move a single ranking for the 2026-27 season, and even the 2028-29 target is soft. But two new rosters eventually means a fresh expansion draft, more available minutes, and a wave of end-of-bench players suddenly getting real run — the kind of stuff that reshapes deep-league and dynasty value.
