Jaylen Brown had the best regular season of his career in 2025-26 — 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists a night, 45.2 fantasy points per game, and a sixth-place MVP finish. Then Jayson Tatum came back from injury, the Celtics lost to a hot 76ers team, and by summer the whole thing had been blown up. Brown is now in Philadelphia. Tatum, at long last, has Boston to himself.
That's the headline for fantasy managers: for the first time in his career, Tatum is the unquestioned No. 1 option on his own roster. He only logged 16 games last season on his return, but the line was loud — 21.8 points, 10 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 44.2 fantasy points per game, nearly matching Brown's full-season output in a fraction of the sample.
Why the Celtics Might Actually Be Fine
The logic here is uncomfortable but hard to argue. Tatum is the better all-around player — the passing, the game-shaping, the ability to read a double team. Add a healthy Paul George into the mix, plus offseason pickups Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley Jr., and you've got a deep, versatile roster around a top-five talent. On paper, this regular-season group could hold up better than the 56-win version that leaned on Brown's scoring bravado.
The friction between the two Jays was real, even if 'toxic' overstates it. Brown wanted the spotlight and never truly wanted to hand it back once he had it. Tatum, more reserved and less controversial, quietly wanted a turn. Now he gets one, with Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and George as passengers instead of co-alphas.
