Don Nelson, the coach who reshaped how modern basketball is played, died Sunday at age 86, his family announced. He finished his 31-season NBA career with 1,335 regular-season victories — the league record until Gregg Popovich passed him in 2022 — and remains second on the all-time list.
Nelson's fingerprints are all over the Dallas franchise that still defines a lot of fantasy value today. Hired as Mavericks head coach and GM before the 1997-98 season, he made the controversial No. 9 pick of Dirk Nowitzki in the 1998 draft and swung the trade for Steve Nash after Nash's rough first two years in Phoenix. Two Hall of Fame careers, one bet by Nelson.
Nowitzki posted an emotional tribute, saying Nelson didn't just draft him — he believed in him and gave him the freedom to play his own way. Nowitzki added he doubts his career unfolds the same without Nelson as his first coach. It's the kind of note that reframes a résumé built on innovation as a human story.
Luka Doncic weighed in too. Nelson was Mavericks team president when Dallas traded for Doncic on draft night in 2018, and Doncic said he'll always respect what Nelson did for the game — especially his willingness to bet on international players. Doncic played in Dallas until the stunning February 2025 trade sent him to the Lakers.

Verdict: hold, and hold firmly. Nothing about this news touches Doncic's value, and a minor recent dip against a monster season-long line isn't a reason to entertain any sell-low nonsense. Keep him locked in as a cornerstone.
