Mild sprain, short absence — don't panic-drop a top-25 asset.

Key numbers
  • MRI: mild left shoulder sprain, re-evaluated next week
  • Expected to miss vs Spurs (Sat) and at Heat (Mon)
  • Had 14 pts, 6 ast, 3 stl in 17 min before injury
  • Nesmith foul upgraded to Flagrant 1 after review
  • Flagg sits #24 overall, #11 at position in our rankings

Cooper Flagg's blistering sophomore start hit a wall in Indianapolis. The reigning Rookie of the Year left Friday's 121-105 win over the Pacers just before halftime after Aaron Nesmith chased him down on a fast break and sent him sprawling with a hard foul. An MRI on Saturday confirmed a mild left shoulder sprain, and the Mavericks have ruled him out against the Spurs with a re-evaluation slated for next week.

The timing stings because Flagg was humming. He had 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals on 4-of-6 shooting in just 17 minutes before the injury, coming off a 32-point explosion in the season opener. For fantasy managers who spent a premium pick on the No. 24 player in our rankings (No. 11 at his position), this is the first real speed bump.

On the play, Flagg grabbed a steal and took off for what looked like an open dunk. Nesmith raced in from behind and clobbered him, prompting Naji Marshall to confront Nesmith and igniting a scrum involving both benches. After review, officials upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 1 and slapped technicals on both Marshall and Nesmith. Flagg sank both free throws, then headed to the locker room for good.

Mavs coach Dusty May kept it measured, calling Nesmith a good guy and a terrific player he's known since high school, and chalking it up to an unfortunate play he wishes hadn't happened. Kyrie Irving, who dropped 24 in the win, was blunter about why Dallas swarmed: the Mavs see protecting their youngest star as non-negotiable, a brotherhood thing.

The Fantasy Fallout

Short-term, Flagg looks set to miss both the Spurs game and Monday's trip to Miami — call it two games, with the real answer coming next week. The usage vacated is real. Irving posted 21.8 fantasy pts/game across his lone outing (2026-27), and he's trending up, so he's the obvious value play off the bench role expanding. Marshall, who went for 28.4 fantasy pts (2026-27) in the opener, becomes a sneaky streaming target if you need bodies while Flagg heals.

The verdict on Flagg himself: hold, and don't overthink it. A mild sprain with a one-week re-eval window isn't the kind of injury that tanks a season. He put up 49 fantasy pts in his only game this year (2026-27) — a tiny sample, but a loud one — and averaged 21-6.7-4.5 last season (2025-26). If a panicked manager in your league is shopping him, that's your cue to pounce. As for Nesmith (No. 17 overall, 23.6 fantasy pts/game last season in 2025-26), he's fine to roster, though keep an eye on any possible discipline from the league.
