Day-to-day ankle — hold your draft stash, don't rush the add.

Key numbers
  • No. 1 overall pick out for Oct. 21 opener vs. Bucks
  • Rolled ankle after 15 min in Friday's preseason game
  • Listed day-to-day by coach Brian Keefe
  • First home game could slip to Oct. 30 vs. Hornets
  • Could also miss Friday's game vs. Toronto

The top pick of the 2026 draft will have to wait a little longer for his first regular-season reps. A.J. Dybantsa won't suit up for Washington's opener on Wednesday against Milwaukee after rolling his ankle just 15 minutes into the Wizards' preseason finale against New Orleans on Friday. Coach Brian Keefe told reporters Tuesday that the former BYU wing is considered day-to-day.

The Wizards aren't going to gamble with their franchise cornerstone in late October. Washington plays its first two games at home, and if Dybantsa also sits Friday against Toronto, fans in the capital won't see him on the floor until Oct. 30 against Charlotte. For a rebuild built around a crop of recent first-rounders, caution here is the obvious play.

It's a frustrating curtain-raiser for a rookie many expected to headline one of the deepest Rookie of the Year races in years. Dybantsa projects as an immediate impact scorer on the wing, which is exactly why patience now matters more than a single box score in Game 1. Ankles that get rushed tend to linger.

What It Means for the Wizards' Hierarchy

Washington's roster is one of the stranger builds in the league. The front office bought low on Trae Young and Anthony Davis last season, pairing two former All-Stars with the young core. Davis is our #13 overall player (#5 at his position), coming off 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 44.2 fantasy points per game across just 20 appearances last season (2025-26, actual). Young averaged 17.9 points and 8 assists for 32.7 fantasy points per game in 15 games over the same stretch — an actual result, not a projection — and currently sits unranked.

With Dybantsa sidelined, those veterans soak up even more of the early usage, which only sharpens the appeal of Davis and Young in the opening week. The counterweight is durability: Davis played 20 games last season and his last five showings dipped 7.3 fantasy points below his season average, so build that risk into any lineup decision.

The Fantasy Take

If you drafted Dybantsa, don't panic and don't cut him — this is a day-to-day ankle, not a structural injury. Keep him stashed and watch Friday's designation before expecting any real volume. Managers in need of an immediate plug should lean on Davis as a top-15 start while Young stays a streaming-only matchup bet given the depressed recent form. Monitor Washington's Oct. 30 home date as the realistic target for Dybantsa's first meaningful fantasy line.
