Adem Bona's Foot Sprain Cracks Open the Sixers' Thin Frontcourt
Bona hurt his foot at FIBA qualifiers and may miss camp reps, leaving Philly's backup-center job — behind the fragile Joel Embiid — wide open.

A Bona absence hands him camp minutes he needs to earn deep-league value.
- Bona injured foot at FIBA World Cup qualifiers
- Return to on-court work expected within 2 weeks of camp
- Bona: 14.7 FPTS/G across 71 games in 2025-26
- Sixers sit ~$1.8M below first-apron hard cap
- Hukporti: 7.9 FPTS/G in 54 games in 2025-26
Adem Bona rolled up a foot injury during FIBA World Cup qualifiers, and the early word out of Philadelphia is that he should be back to on-court workouts inside the first two weeks of training camp. That's the good news. The bad news is that this minor scare pokes at the Sixers' most obvious weakness: what happens behind Joel Embiid when — not if — he sits.
Bona started 2025-26 as the frontrunner for the backup center job after posting 4.8 points and 4.3 rebounds across 71 games, good for 14.7 fantasy points per game and our No. 298 overall rank (49th among centers). He outplayed Andre Drummond for long stretches last year. But that role only exists because Embiid, even after saying in the spring that his knee felt better, isn't suddenly logging 82 games. Back-to-backs and strategic rest are baked in.
Why the Backup Spot Matters More Here
For most teams, the No. 2 center is an afterthought. For the Sixers it's a load-bearing wall. Bona is essentially the new Paul Reed — a high-motor chaos big who can't stay out of foul trouble, fouling at a 4.7-per-36 clip over his first two seasons. His form was already cooling before the injury: minus-3.9 fantasy points over his last five games versus his season average.
The obvious fallback is Ariel Hukporti, signed this offseason with part of the bi-annual exception. He spent two years as the Knicks' third-string center and managed just 2.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 54 games last season (7.9 fantasy points, No. 383 overall). At 7-foot, 246 pounds, he's got the frame. Whether he can actually anchor the backup minutes is genuinely unproven — though his last-five form (+6.7 vs. average) at least hints he was trending up.
The Cap Squeeze
Here's the kicker: Philly can't just shop for insurance. After adding LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, they're roughly $1.8 million under their first-apron hard cap, meaning no signings beyond an undrafted rookie until early December. That leaves Nick Nurse to lean on small-ball — Dominick Barlow at the 5, or Dean Wade (No. 274, 16.1 fantasy points in 2025-26) sliding up — neither of which graded well without a true rim protector last year.
For fantasy managers in standard leagues, none of this moves the needle much yet — Bona's a deep-league flier at best and the injury looks short-term. The name to track is Hukporti: if Bona's foot lingers into the regular season, Ariel inherits real minutes behind an oft-absent Embiid, which is the only path to standalone value here. Stash him only in deepest formats and watch the camp reports; otherwise, hold and wait for clarity.
