Kon Knueppel Nears Hornets Debut After G League Practice Assignment
The runner-up for 2024-25 Rookie of the Year is close to debuting after missing Charlotte's first five games with a hamstring strain.

A debut is imminent; grab him before the points roll in.
- Missed first 5 games with strained left hamstring
- Still listed out for Friday vs Washington
- 18.5 PPG, 273 made 3s as a rookie (2024-25)
- No. 4 overall pick, 43% from deep on 673 attempts
- Hornets sit 3-2 without him
Kon Knueppel just took his biggest step toward a season debut. The Hornets assigned the second-year wing to practice with the Greensboro Storm, their G League affiliate, on Thursday — a clear signal that the hamstring strain that cost him Charlotte's first five games is nearly behind him. He's still officially out for Friday's road game in Washington, but the clock is ticking down fast.
Knueppel, 21, strained his left hamstring just over a month ago during what the team called offseason on-court work, costing him all of training camp and the preseason. The timing of his return is the only real question now. Charlotte plays a back-to-back this weekend, so the team may hold him until a home game — either Saturday against Philadelphia or Monday versus Detroit feels like the likely landing spot for his first appearance.
This matters because of what Knueppel did as a rookie. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Cooper Flagg, averaging 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists while leading the entire league with 273 made 3-pointers on 43% shooting. That's not a role player returning — that's a legitimate offensive engine on a team that overachieved its way to 44 wins and a play-in berth last season.
What It Means For Charlotte
The Hornets have survived without their full rotation, sitting at 3-2 even with Knueppel, Coby White (left calf strain) and Grant Williams (right hamstring strain) all sidelined. Brandon Miller has carried the scoring load, pouring in 25.6 points on a heavy 24 shots per game. In our 2026-27 numbers, Miller is averaging 24.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists across four games for 37.1 fantasy points per game, and he's trending up — plus-2.8 fantasy points over his last five versus his season average.
Naz Reid, acquired in the LaMelo Ball trade, is second at 17 points and 8.8 rebounds but got benched for the second half against Detroit for not meeting the coaching staff's standards. Knueppel's return should eventually spread the offense out and take pressure off both Miller and Reid, even if it trims Miller's sky-high shot volume slightly.
The Fantasy Verdict
If Knueppel is sitting on your waiver wire, this is your window. A healthy version of last year's No. 4 overall pick — 18.5 points and elite 3-point volume — is a locked-in weekly starter, and he won't be available once he debuts. Add him now, stash him through Friday's out designation, and be ready to deploy him the moment Charlotte clears him, whether that's Saturday or Monday.
