A four-week hamstring absence on a crowded guard roster — cash out now.

Key numbers
  • Grade 2 left hamstring strain, out at least 4 weeks
  • 14 pts, 3 ast, 2 reb in 23 min before exiting
  • Averaged 15.8 pts, 5.5 ast in first 4 Blazers games
  • Played just 79 games over the last three seasons
  • Portland ranks No. 2 in defense (101.3) through week 1.5

Ja Morant's return to a healthy season lasted exactly four games. Portland announced the guard suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain Thursday against Memphis and will miss at least the next four weeks. It happened on a mundane play — a missed floater, a lunge for his own rebound — and Morant gutted out two more defensive possessions before checking out for good with 7:46 left in a 124-103 loss, his new team's first defeat after a 3-0 start.

There's cruel symmetry here. Morant was facing the Grizzlies for the first time since this summer's trade, and he left with 14 points, three assists and two rebounds in 23 minutes. Through his first four games in Portland he'd averaged 15.8 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds — modest by his standards, but a start. For a guy who logged just 79 total games over the previous three seasons, including only 20 last year (2025-26), another soft-tissue setback is the exact storyline fantasy managers feared when they reached for him on draft night.

What It Means for Portland

The silver lining for Blazers fans — and the headache for fantasy managers everywhere else — is that Portland was already drowning in guards. Veteran Jrue Holiday is the likely replacement in the starting lineup, which should only sharpen a defense that already ranks second in the NBA at 101.3 through a week and a half. First-year coach Micah Nori has leaned on Damian Lillard (29.5 minutes) up top, with Holiday (25.3) and Scoot Henderson (18.8) filling in behind Morant's 25.8.

Henderson is the name to watch. With Morant sidelined and Shaedon Sharpe already out indefinitely with a torn lateral meniscus, the former No. 3 pick could jump into a bigger bench role heading into restricted free agency. That said, Sidy Cissoko (22.8 minutes) is currently out-playing him for run, so this isn't a clean handoff. Nori's rotation is a coin flip until we see two or three games of post-Morant minutes.

The Fantasy Fallout

Morant is the kind of player you can never fully trust and can never fully quit. Four weeks out means missing roughly 12-14 games, and in deeper leagues you simply can't hold a stash that long on a thin roster. If a contender in your league still believes in the upside, this is the moment to float him in a package — his name carries more value than his availability. Stash-and-wait only works if you have the IR slot and the bench depth to absorb it.

Action items: sell Morant where you can, and monitor Portland's next two games before committing a waiver claim. Scoot Henderson is the speculative add if Nori signals a starting or primary-bench role, but don't burn your top FAAB on a rotation that's still a logjam. Holiday's value ticks up slightly in points leagues with the extra minutes, though his ceiling is capped. For now, patience beats panic.
